This means that the publishing pond just got smaller, leaving a few B&H authorly fish flapping around on the shore. Those authors will have to flip themselves back into the pond or die, and I doubt anyone will willingly suffocate in the sand.
Translation: competition for contracts is going to be fiercer.
It was hard enough to get published before, but now it will be tougher, which creates a whole lot of angst out there in writer land. You'll be a nervous wreck if your eyeballs are on the state of the publishing industry and/or our economy.
But here's the deal...God is still on the throne. Keep writing. Keep honing your craft. And most importantly, keep your focus on the One who ultimately awards contracts.

Amen, Michelle! The changes taking place in the book industry are nerve-wracking, but yes, God is able, and if His will includes a book contract, then there's nothing to worry about. :-)

Michelle, I have a slightly different take on the B & H situation. I think mainstream publishers are having a harder time competing with Indie and even self publishing. Their pull back to regroup and rebrand shows me that publishing options are increasing, not decreasing. Yes, with the big names maybe the pond is shrinking, but there are so many more options that are becoming more and more the best choices for an author. I see it as some of the giants are nervous. Not really a bad thing for the little guys. As I said, just my two cents worth.
Edie ~ Not gonna argue with you, girlie, because you're right...there are new avenues opening up all the time for writers, uncharted and with potential for success. I merely meant to say the pond of traditional CBA publishers has definitely shrunk.
