Far be it from me to discount the sage advice of famous author Annie Dillard. This chick knows what she's doing. I shudder to even stand in her literary shadow.
BUT (and I've always got a big but)...
I happen to disagree. Messiness makes me crazy. I can't think creatively if there's a pile of paperwork strewn over my desk. Or a pile of dirty dishes winking at me from the kitchen counter. Or knowing the laundry pile is the size of Mount Crumpet.
I need an appealing workplace, or at least one that's tidy. That's why my writing haunt of choice is a coffee shop. If there are scone crumbs on the table, I don't feel the least bit responsible to clean them up before I sit down to write a scene. Naturally, I choose a different tabletop to set up shop, but I think you get the point.
So, how about you? Does your muse work best in an appealing or unappealing work space?

Appealing by far. Definitely love quiet with nature.
Oh yeah, nature and quiet. Ahhh. I feel like I'm getting a massage just thinking about it.
I'm with both of you Michelle's. I work much better with a clean, appealing space. Even more so if I have a large window with nature outside it. However, I must admit, I have notes in a few different piles around the room at the moment...research.
About those piles, Terri, there's a reason I go OUT to write. I'm not saying my house is Martha Stewart picture perfect. My research stretches from rafters to basement. Literally.
I keep cleaning up my desk, but overnight the dust bunnies, who live beneath it, strew the clutter around like it's paper rugby. My muse prefers caffeine, so I go to Starbucks to write.
I hear ya, Ane. Caffeine and writing do have a way of fitting glove and hand, eh?
I try to stay away from the coffee shops lest I be tempted to buy drink after drink... But I agree, its a good quiet place to get by yourself and work. I like to grab the laptop and park my butt in a big comfy chair in the living room. If the weather's nice, I open all the windows. :-)
Yeah...coffee shops are a drain on the ol' pocketbook and do tend to make me inch higher toward a larger dress size.
